Soul your city

We are shaped by the spaces we inhabit. They have a subtle but profound impact on the way we feel, on the way we see the world, and our place in it.

Developers control more than we think

Most of the spaces we spend time in were built by developers: our homes, the schools we went to, the restaurants we eat at, the bar where we grab drinks with a friend.

Developers determine our neighborhoods, deciding what should be built, where, and how they should look and feel. They choose the options available to us based only on the profit they expect to turn.

The result?

Some communities get left behind.  “Affordable housing” often ends up cutting costs at every corner. Then “affordable” commercials spaces are built only for form and function, rather than aesthetics. This combination can cause the appearance of the whole community to fall into disrepair.

These types of built-environments create a sense of hopelessness, where the people that live there expect less, have less pride in their physical space, and then pass those perceived limitations on to the next generation.

We’re focusing on underserved communities.

It’s easy to build in established communities. We’ve accepted the challenge of giving more people access to beautiful, inspiring spaces.

Because underserved does not mean undeserving; dopeness is for everyone.

VISION

The way forward is all about integration.

We reimagine community: we rebuild neighborhoods that will attract people from different backgrounds and income levels. Where diversity enriches and contrast inspires. We’re building communities based on inclusion.

We believe that rebuilding a community, block by block, is a both a sustainable solution and a unique opportunity for philanthropic investment. And that’s good for everyone.

That’s why Habitable Art is not just an Art + Build Lab; it’s a movement for social change.
